The American League Player of the Week award goes to Adam Hyzdu, Toronto's starting rightfielder. Hyzdu helped his team with an average of .600 and 9 RBI in 25 at bats. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Montreal's Vladimir Guerrero this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Vladimir went 16 for 38 (.421), while hitting 6 HR and collecting 16 RBI.
Sunday 8/14/1998: Atlanta's Fred McGriff gets milestone hit
PITTSBURGH - Atlanta's players had every reason to congratulate Fred McGriff, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! His hit in the 7th inning was a two run homerun off Paul Wagner. Along with his 2000 hits, Fred collected 316 homeruns and 1291 RBI in 14 seasons. 'Wow. That is all I can say now. I'm thrilled.'
Saturday 8/13/1998: Ichiro Suzuki drills 6 hits
BOSTON - On Saturday, New York (A)'s rightfielder Ichiro Suzuki displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Boston, punishing their pitchers with six hits. Number 4 in the 7th inning, a shot estimated at 319 feet, cleared the wall in left field. A pitch from Mark Grant in the 8th inning left his bat for a RBI triple. He collected singles in the 1st inning , in the 2nd (one RBI) , in the 6th (one RBI) and in the 8th inning (one RBI). Ichiro scored 4 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 175 hits in 472 at bats, resulting in a .371 batting average. The final score of the game was 33-2.
Friday 8/12/1998: Hideo Nomo turns in great performance against Chicago (N)
LOS ANGELES (N) - Los Angeles (N)'s right-hander Hideo Nomo is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Chicago (N) on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 9th time he has done it in his career. Nomo (13-7) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 1, throwing 120 pitches. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Los Angeles (N)'s second baseman Luis Alicea went 2 for 4, homering once, with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Nomo. Los Angeles (N) improved its record to 81-35, scoring 7 runs on 12 hits.
Friday 8/12/1998: Greg Maddux NO-HITS Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH - Atlanta's right-hander Greg Maddux made some history today, firing a no-hitter against Pittsburgh. Their hitters found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, never having a chance against his overpowering stuff. Ray Lankford spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with no outs in the 7th inning. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today, and it's especially nice to do it in such fashion.' Maddux (17-7) fanned 5 and walked 2, throwing 114 pitches. Mike Stanley provided Atlanta with the offense Maddux needed as he finished 2 for 4. Atlanta improved its record to 71-45, scoring 4 runs on 7 hits.
Thursday 8/11/1998: Mike Moore out for 4-5 weeks
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis is without its right-hander Mike Moore for at least 4-5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Al Chambers in a game against New York (N). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Bicep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Mike has a record of 1-6 this season, with an ERA of 5.05. In 62.1 Innings he was able to strike out 58 batters.
Monday 8/8/1998: Sid Fernandez blanks Tampa Bay with a 2-hitter
TAMPA BAY - Sid Fernandez had some fun again. Tampa Bay hitters did not. Detroit's southpaw gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 19 career shutouts in 403 games started. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Fernandez (15-5) struck out 7 and walked 2, throwing 69 of 103 pitches for strikes. Eddie Zambrano helped Fernandez at the plate, he went 1 for 3, doubling once. Detroit scored 1 run on 5 hits.
