Monday 9/5/1998: New York (N)'s Clark wins Player of the Week award
Henry A. Rodriguez wins his 5th Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He hit .462 with 12 RBI and slugged .962 in 26 at bats. New York (N)'s first baseman Tony Clark had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. In 21 at bats he hit .476 with 3 HR and 12 RBI.
Sunday 9/4/1998: Toronto's Rob Nelson hits for the cycle
SEATTLE - Rob Nelson is a pretty good hitter, but his 4 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. His 1st hit, a two-run homerun off Keith Brown in the 1st inning, cleared the fence in left field. A pitch from Keith Brown in the 5th inning left his bat for a double. A single in the 8th off Esteban Loaiza accounted for his 3rd hit. A RBI triple off Bartolo Colon in the 9th inning, accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Rob did drive in 3 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He is hitting .291 this season, with 34 HR and 104 RBI. He becomes the 95th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. Joey Meyer was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 8/28/1998.
Saturday 9/3/1998: Mike Poehl dominates Arizona, gives up just one hit
ARIZONA - Montreal's right-hander Mike Poehl is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Arizona on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 6th time he has done it in his career. With one out in the 9th inning Andy Tomberlin singled to break up the no-hitter. Poehl (15-3) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 6. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Montreal's centerfielder Rondell White went 1 for 5, doubling once, with 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Poehl. The final score of the game was 7-0.
