In just one season, always positive manager Ted Lasso has reasons to looking forward to the 1999 season with an optimistic attitude. The Mets managed to flip their record last season, providing Queens with their first winning season since 1990 with an 89-73 record. The team made several trades leading up to free agency in a hope to close the gap behind the top of the division and hopefully competing for the wildcard this season.
The Mets began the new calendar year with a trading flurry over the weekend. Leaving NYC on a high note statistically, C Mike Piazza is headed just down the subway as part of a 4 player trade that gives the Mets top end starter Shane Reynolds, leftie MR Jamie Walker, and Piazza's replacement behind the plate, Greg Myers. Piazza is in the last season of a 2 year x 20 million dollar deal. Mets ownership confirmed that they have been looking for a trade partner for Piazza for a while but the Yankees deal came at the perfect time freeing up some money and adding several likely Opening Day starters.
Shortly after the bombshell was dropped that Piazza was trading in Mets blue for Yankee pinstripes the news broke that a deal had been reached with the Dodgers to bring IF Orlando Miller to the Big Apple to replace some of the power that was lost in the Piazza trade.
Even as the HOFFBL world was reacting (or not) to the Miller deal, the Mets announced that they were swapping second basemen with the Marlins as part of a rare inter divisional trade. Greg Jefferies looks to add some more power into the lineup, batting 4th, behind fellow switch hitter Tony Clark.
When asked about the flurry of trades Lasso said, " We had to balance money while improving our team for very tough divisional competition. We weren't real happy about selling our first round pick to SF but we needed a little leeway on the books because we hope to be competing right at the top of the division this year and having a little extra money if we need to make a move this summer."
