Detroit's third baseman Robin Ventura had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Robin was on fire, hitting .500 with 2 HR and 7 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 9 games. Ventura has walked 7 times this year and posts a .413 OBP. While batting .345, 19 for 55, he has driven in 20 runs. Matt Stairs wins his 9th Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. In 23 at bats he hit .348 with 6 HR and 7 RBI. BOSTON - Boston's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, catcher John Flaherty, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 7-8 weeks. Broken Foot was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Flaherty has walked 4 times this year and posts a .256 OBP. While batting .171, 6 for 35, he has driven in 3 runs.
Friday 4/15/1999: Chicago (A)'s Kile out for full season
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s right-hander Darryl Kile will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against Baltimore on Friday. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Bicep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. In 3 starts this year Darryl struck out 15 batters in 21.1 innings of work. His ERA is 1.69, his record 2-0.

CALIFORNIA - Jim Edmonds beat California, but he did it without mercy, playing like a one man wrecking crew. Minnesota's centerfielder slugged three homeruns, once again proving that he is among the elite sluggers. In the 1st inning he unloaded a GRAND SLAM off Orlando Hernandez. A pitch from John Hudek in the 3rd inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 389 feet from home plate in right-center. A 446 foot drive to center field marked his 3rd bomb, a solo homerun off Mel Rojas in the 7th inning. Overall he stroked 3 hits in 5 AB, with three runs scored and driving in 6 runs. California's leftfielder Ken Griffey Jr. had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He hit .444 with 12 RBI and slugged 1.259 in 27 at bats. Los Angeles (N)'s rightfielder Lenny Dykstra had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Lenny pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .538 with 4 HR and 11 RBI while slugging 1.115.
Sunday 4/10/1999: Mickey Morandini (TBR) will miss full season
TAMPA BAY - Tampa Bay's second baseman Mickey Morandini will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Tampa Bay and Baltimore. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Morandini collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Tampa Bay wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Morandini had suffered a Torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament.
Friday 4/8/1999: Wally Joyner has 2000th career hits
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's third baseman Wally Joyner was in good mood after the game against Arizona, and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 2000th career hit. His hit in the 6th inning was a single off Danny Patterson. His best year so far was 1997 where he hit .330 with 14 homeruns and 89 RBI. 'My firends always told me that I will do it one day. LOS ANGELES (N) - Joel Adamson had his best stuff going, and St. Louis hitters had nothing to cheer about. Los Angeles (N)'s left-hander pitched a 1-hitter, his 1st shutout of the season. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.'
