Cleveland's centerfielder Carl Everett had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Carl went 13 for 25 (.520), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 7 RBI. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Los Angeles (N)'s Jim Thome this time, as the third baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .520 with 9 RBI and slugged .960 in 25 at bats.
Saturday 4/23/1999: Bernie F. Williams on fire, crushes three
CHICAGO (A) - Bernie F. Williams powered Chicago (A) to a 14-0 win over Boston. He did it in style by homering three times. In the 1st inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Jason Beverlin. Number 2 in the 3rd inning, a shot estimated at 394 feet, cleared the wall in right-center. His 3rd shot, a three-run homerun off Brian Holman in the 7th inning, cleared the fence in right-center. Overall he stroked 4 hits in 4 AB, doubling once, with FIVE runs scored and collecting 9 RBI. On 4/15/1999, Jim Edmonds was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game.
Tuesday 4/19/1999: Quilvio Veras (CHN) will miss full season
CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s second baseman Quilvio Veras suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself firing a ball to first base. He collapsed in pain after the throw and was helped off the field. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Torn Ligament Elbow which will require surgery. He has hit no homeruns while batting .353 this season. His 24 hits and 4 walks add up to a .397 on-base percentage.
