The National League's best player of the month was Montreal's Vladimir Guerrero, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. He had an on base percentage of .455 and hit .407, while driving in 21 runs.
Friday 4/29/1999: Toronto's Gary Sheffield has great day, hits three longballs
TORONTO - Toronto's third baseman Gary Sheffield showed the world why he is one of the most amazing sluggers in a 7-4 win over New York (A). He almost knockes the cover off the ball, resulting in three homeruns. A 395 foot drive to right field marked his 1st bomb, a solo homerun off Bill Pulsipher in the 1st inning. It tied the ballgame at 1. His 2nd shot, a solo homerun off Bill Pulsipher in the 3rd inning, cleared the fence in left field. A pitch from Keith Foulke in the 6th inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 420 feet from home plate in center field. Gary finished 3 for 4, scoring three times and driving in 4 runs. On 4/23/1999, Bernie F. Williams was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game. The final score of the game was 7-4.
Thursday 4/28/1999: Masato Yoshii quiets Seattle bats with shutout
OAKLAND - Seattle's hitters looked uncomfortable, and Oakland's Masato Yoshii didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' Yoshii (1-4) fanned 3 and walked none, throwing 92 pitches. Oakland's first baseman Mark McGwire stroked 2 hits in 3 AB. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Yoshii. The final score of the game was 1-0.
Tuesday 4/26/1999: Larry Walker socks five hits for Texas
DETROIT - Texas' leftfielder Larry Walker once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Detroit's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Tuesday. His 3rd hit, a two-run homerun off Livan Hernandez in the 4th inning, cleared the fence in center field. His 4th hit, off Brendan Donnelly in the 8th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in left field. He had singles in the 1st , in the 2nd and in the 9th inning (one RBI). Larry scored 4 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 29 hits in 81 at bats, resulting in a .358 batting average. Texas scored 19 runs on 23 hits.
