Toronto's catcher Joe Oliver had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Oliver helped his team with an average of .455 and 13 RBI in 22 at bats. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! Milwaukee's third baseman Kazuhiro Kiyohara had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. He had an on base percentage of .586 and hit .583, while driving in 6 runs.
Sunday 5/8/1999: Edgar Martinez on fire, laces five hits
COLORADO - Cincinnati's third baseman Edgar Martinez once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Colorado's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Sunday. His 1st hit, a two-run homerun off Brad Radke in the 1st inning, landed an estimated 367 feet from home plate. His 3rd hit was a double off Joaquin Benoit in the 8th inning. Number 4 in the 8th inning, a shot estimated at 409 feet, cleared the wall in right field. He collected singles in the 6th inning (one RBI) Edgar scored 5 runs, and he collected 7 RBI as well! His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .305. Cincinnati scored 22 runs on 21 hits.
Friday 5/6/1999: Pedro Munoz nabs five hits against Colorado
COLORADO - Cincinnati's leftfielder Pedro Munoz accomplished a difficult feat in a 12-4 win over Colorado, drilling five hits to improve his career batting average to .275! In the 1st inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Darren Oliver. His 4th hit, off Chad Bradford in the 7th inning, was a three-run homerun and cleared the fence in right field. He collected singles in the 2nd inning , in the 6th and in the 9th . Pedro scored 3 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! He now has a total of 28 hits this season, accounting for a .239 batting average. Cincinnati improved its record to 16-16, scoring 12 runs on 20 hits.
Friday 5/6/1999: Florida's Garrelts severely injured
FLORIDA - Florida is without its ace Scott Garrelts for at least 5-6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Luis Alicea in a game against Los Angeles (N). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Pulled Bicep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His ERA of 3.73 helped him to a 4-2 record this year. He struck out 32 and walked 9 in 41 innings. He's 5th in the National League in wins!
Thursday 5/5/1999: Rusty Greer punishes Milwaukee with four hits, cycle
MILWAUKEE - San Diego's centerfielder Rusty Greer once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Milwaukee's pitching staff with a 4 hit performance on Thursday. In the 1st inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Bobby J. Jones. A single in the 5th off Bobby J. Jones accounted for his 2nd hit. A pitch from Tony Saunders in the 6th inning left his bat for a RBI triple. In the 8th inning he belted a double off Jose Cabrera. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Rusty scored 3 runs, and he collected 2 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 36 hits in 120 at bats, resulting in a .300 batting average. 97 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Rusty. On 9/30/1998, Mike Devereaux was the last player to hit for the cycle.
Tuesday 5/3/1999: Ray Lankford (PIT) will miss full season
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's leftfielder Ray Lankford suffered a season ending injury when he was struck by a pitch from Colorado's Brad Radke. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Lankford was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Broken Wrist. This year Lankford drove in 11 and scored 23 runs while batting .360 with 7 homeruns. He's 8th in the National League in batting!
