CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, centerfielder Carlos Beltran, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 5 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Pulled Groin Muscle. His season numbers are: .225 AVG, 18 hits, 4 doubles, one triple and one tater, along with 7 RBI and 3 runs scored.
Tuesday 5/24/1999: Manny Aybar fires NO-NO against Oakland
BALTIMORE - With his best stuff going, Baltimore's Manny Aybar overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Oakland had no chance, getting NO hits against the right-hander. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Aybar (2-1) struck out 8 and walked 4, throwing 62 of 109 pitches for strikes. Carlos Baerga provided Baltimore with the offense Aybar needed as he stroked 2 hits in 3 AB, hitting a double. Baltimore scored 3 runs on 6 hits.
Monday 5/23/1999: Milwaukee's Park severely injured
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's ace Chan Ho Park suffered a severe injury on Monday and will be out for at least 4-5 weeks. In the 6th of the game against Houston he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Ruptured Tricep Tendon. Chan Ho has a record of 7-0 this season, with an ERA of 2.31. In 66.1 Innings he was able to strike out 81 batters. He's 9th in the National League in ERA and 2nd in wins!
Monday 5/23/1999: Rivera (DET) and McGriff (ATL) win P.O.W. award
Detroit's shortstop Luis A. Rivera had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Luis A. pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .560 with 2 HR and 7 RBI while slugging .840. The National League's best player of the week was Atlanta's Fred McGriff, who wins the award for the 6th time in his career. In 24 at bats he hit .417 with 5 HR and 8 RBI. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! This year McGriff drove in 29 and scored 31 runs while batting .250 with 9 homeruns.
Sunday 5/22/1999: Mike Devereaux has 2000th career hits
ATLANTA - Atlanta's centerfielder Mike Devereaux joined some elite company today, collecting his 2000th career hit! With two outs in the 4th inning, Mike drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. Along with his 2000 hits, Mike collected 80 homeruns and 650 RBI in 10 seasons. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!'
