Wednesday 6/1/1999: Toronto's Russell earns Pitcher of the Month award
The best month of May in the American League certainly had Toronto's right-hander Jeff Russell, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. He struck out 32 hitters in his 6 starts, putting together a record of 5-0 while pitching 32 innings. His ERA in May was 0.74. His ERA of 1.85 helped him to a 7-2 record this year. He struck out 66 and walked 12 in 73 innings. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 4th in wins! Montreal's Mike Poehl had a terrific May, and it earned him the National League Pitcher of the month award. He went 3-0 in May and finished the month with an ERA of 0.23. He struck out 43 in 39 innings. Mike has a record of 5-0 this season, with an ERA of 1.08. In 75 Innings he was able to strike out 76 batters.
Wednesday 6/1/1999: Red hot Rivera and Bonds win Batter of the Month award
The Batter of the Month award in the American League goes to Detroit's Luis A. Rivera this time, as the shortstop displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Luis A. was on fire, hitting .414 with 11 homeruns and 29 RBI. Rivera has hit 15 homeruns this year while batting .381. He adds 10 doubles, along with 50 runs scored. He's 2nd in the American League in batting, 7th in homeruns and 7th in RBI! The National League's best player of the month was San Francisco's Barry Bonds, who wins the award for the 6th time in his career. Barry went 46 for 99 (.465), while hitting 10 HR and collecting 34 RBI. His season features a batting average of .388 (76 hits in 196 AB), 21 doubles, 2 triples and 17 bombs. Bonds collected 53 RBI and 55 runs as well. He's 2nd in the National League in batting, 4th in homeruns and 2nd in RBI!
Monday 5/30/1999: Darren Daulton out for 8 weeks
OAKLAND - Oakland's catcher Darren Daulton will miss about 8 weeks after being knocked unconscious in a collision at home plate, in the 9th inning of the game between Oakland and Cleveland. He was helped off the field after the incident. Daulton will miss at least 8 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Dislocated Shoulder. Daulton has walked 26 times this year and posts a .283 OBP. While batting .186, 37 for 199, he has driven in 10 runs.
Monday 5/30/1999: Detroit's Branyan wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Detroit's Russell Branyan, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Russell pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .400 with 5 HR and 8 RBI while slugging 1.000. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Florida's Felix Jose this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Jose helped his team with an average of .591 and 16 RBI in 22 at bats. Felix managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. Felix has gone 67 for 171 (.392) this season, hitting 19 bombs and driving in 54 runs. He has scored 43 runs on his own. He's 1st in the National League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 1st in RBI!
Friday 5/27/1999: Houston's Springer out for 6 weeks
HOUSTON - Houston's right-hander Russ Springer suffered a severe injury on Friday and will be out for at least 6 weeks. In the 4th of the game against Chicago (N) he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Spasms Back was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Springer compiled an ERA of 5.09, going 1-0 in 0 starts. He fanned 14 while giving up 22 hits in 23 innings.
Wednesday 5/25/1999: Mel Hall clubs six hits in a game
COLORADO - Mel Hall is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 6 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. He had singles in the 3rd inning , in the 4th (one RBI) , in the 6th inning , in the 7th , in the 9th inning and in the 10th (one RBI). Mel did drive in 2 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He now has a total of 50 hits this season, accounting for a .309 batting average. Atlanta improved its record to 29-20, scoring 17 runs on 20 hits.
