Monday 6/6/1999: Seattle's Mantei severely injured
SEATTLE - Seattle's right-hander Matt Mantei suffered a severe injury on Monday and will be out for at least 7 weeks. In the 6th of the game against Baltimore he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. In 0 starts this year Matt struck out 24 batters in 19.1 innings of work. His ERA is 3.26, his record 1-0.
Monday 6/6/1999: Matt D. Williams (MIN) will miss full season
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's third baseman Matt D. Williams will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Minnesota and Tampa Bay. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Williams collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Minnesota wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Williams had suffered a Torn Abdominal Muscle. Williams has hit for a .314 average this season. He has 36 extra base hits along with 145 total bases, resulting in a .633 slugging percentage.
Monday 6/6/1999: San Diego's Jaha wins Player of the Week award
Toronto's third baseman Gary Sheffield had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Gary was on fire, hitting .333 with 5 HR and 10 RBI. Gary managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! This year Sheffield drove in 52 and scored 68 runs while batting .299 with 18 taters. The National League's best player of the week was San Diego's John Jaha, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. He hit .429 with 7 RBI and slugged 1.238 in 21 at bats. His season numbers are: .270 AVG, 51 hits, 13 doubles, no triples and 11 bombs, along with 29 RBI and 41 runs scored.
Friday 6/3/1999: John Smoltz turns in great performance against Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE - John Smoltz had some fun again. Milwaukee hitters did not. Atlanta's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 51 career shutouts in 417 games started. With two outs in the 5th inning Dave Nilsson doubled to break up the no-hitter. Smoltz (5-2) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking 1, throwing 119 pitches. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Atlanta's second baseman Aaron Boone finished with 1 hit in 3 AB, hitting a homerun, with 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Smoltz. Atlanta improved its record to 31-25, scoring 7 runs on 10 hits.
Friday 6/3/1999: San Diego's John Jaha slams three taters
ST. LOUIS - San Diego beat St. Louis 9-1, but that was not the real story of the game. John Jaha was, as he went deep three times. In the 1st inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Gabe White. A pitch from Tony Ghelfi in the 7th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 411 feet from home plate in left-center. His 3rd shot, off Tony Ghelfi in the 8th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. John stroked 4 hits in 5 AB, hitting a double, with FOUR runs scored and collecting 4 RBI. So far this season he is batting .273 with 11 homers and 29 RBI. Russell Branyan was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 5/25/1999.
Thursday 6/2/1999: New York (N)'s Alfonzo out for 6 weeks
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s rightfielder Edgardo Alfonzo suffered a serious injury when he was struck by a pitch from Atlanta's Tom Glavine. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Alfonzo will probaby miss 6 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Broken Finger which will require surgery. Edgardo is hitting .250 this year, with 54 hits in 216 at bats. He has driven in 39 runs, slugging .440.
