Tuesday 7/12/1999: Pittsburgh Pirates players severely injured
PITTSBURGH - A charter bus carrying the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball players was involved in a rollover crash near Duquesne University Tuesday night, according to authorities in Allegheny County. The crash happened on Interstate 579 at around 11:45 p.m. Officers said that the bus was carrying 41 people who were coming back from a game. 16 people were transported to a nearby hospital. The bus driver required extrication, who claimed he was distracted by the GM's incessant complaints about injuries.
Monday 7/11/1999: Ramirez (BOS) and Ordonez (CIN) win P.O.W. award
Manny Ramirez from Boston wins his 6th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Manny pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .556 with 1 HR and 8 RBI while slugging .889. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Cincinnati's rightfielder Magglio Ordonez. Ordonez helped his team with an average of .591 and 6 RBI in 22 at bats. Ordonez has walked 30 times this year and posts a .390 OBP. While batting .326, 106 for 325, he has driven in 45 runs.
Saturday 7/9/1999: Houston's Thompson severely injured
HOUSTON - Houston's left-hander Justin Thompson suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 2nd of the game against San Diego he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Justin has a record of 2-5 this season, with an ERA of 6.15. In 79 Innings he was able to strike out 49 batters.
Friday 7/8/1999: California's Mitchell out for 5 weeks
CALIFORNIA - California's shortstop Kevin Mitchell will miss at least 5 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Groin Muscle. Mitchell has hit for a .254 average this season. He has 28 extra base hits along with 115 total bases, resulting in a .423 slugging percentage.
Thursday 7/7/1999: Darin Erstad uncorks cycle hits against St. Louis
HOUSTON - Darin Erstad led Houston to a 9-8 win over St. Louis by squeezing four hits out of his bat. That's not the best part, though. He hit for the cycle as well! A pitch from Hideki Irabu in the 1st inning left his bat for a double. Hit number 2 followed in the 4th inning, a RBI triple. A single in the 5th off Jim Pena accounted for his 3rd hit. In the 7th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Tony Ghelfi. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Darin scored 3 runs, and he collected 2 RBI as well! His 4 hit performance increases his batting average to .299. He becomes the 100th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. On 6/30/1999, Jeff Bagwell was the last player to hit for the cycle.
Thursday 7/7/1999: Steve Avery turns in great performance against Philadelphia
CINCINNATI - Steve Avery had some fun again. Philadelphia hitters did not. Cincinnati's left-hander gave up just one hit in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 5 career shutouts in 180 games started. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Avery (7-4) struck out 4 and walked none, throwing 60 of 97 pitches for strikes. Cincinnati's second baseman Ron Gant stroked 2 hits in 2 AB, and collecting 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Avery. Cincinnati scored 3 runs on 7 hits.
