Tuesday 7/19/1999: California's Charlton out for 7 weeks
CALIFORNIA - California's southpaw Norm Charlton suffered a severe injury on Tuesday and will be out for at least 7 weeks. In the 3rd of the game against Toronto he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Strained Bicep Muscle which will require surgery. His ERA of 4.11 helped him to a 9-4 record this year. He struck out 62 and walked 47 in 100.2 innings. Norm has pitched one shutout and one complete game.
Monday 7/18/1999: Montreal's White wins Player of the Week award
Tampa Bay's second baseman Dean Palmer had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Dean pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .320 with 6 HR and 15 RBI while slugging 1.040. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! Palmer has hit 29 bombs this year while batting .245. He adds 14 doubles, along with 41 runs scored. Rondell White wins his 1st Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Rondell pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .435 with 5 HR and 11 RBI while slugging 1.130. His season features a batting average of .294 (98 hits in 333 AB), 18 doubles, one triple and 19 homeruns. White collected 54 RBI and 57 runs as well.
Thursday 7/14/1999: Philadelphia's Taylor out for 6-7 weeks
PHILADELPHIA - When it rains, it pours. Philadelphia's ace Billy Taylor will not pitch for at least 6-7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Colorado where he left the field in the 3rd inning. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Pulled Bicep Muscle which will require surgery. This season Taylor compiled an ERA of 4.90, going 7-9 in 23 starts. He fanned 125 while giving up 120 hits in 125 innings.
