PITTSBURGH - Paul Wagner took the mound and never left. And Houston hitters couldn't touch him at all. Pittsburgh's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 7 career shutouts in 159 games started. Wagner (9-9) struck out 7 and walked 3, throwing 71 of 114 pitches for strikes. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Richie Sexson helped Wagner at the plate, he finished with 3 hits in 4 AB, hitting two dingers, with three runs scored and driving in 5 runs. Pittsburgh improved its record to 62-39, scoring 13 runs on 10 hits.
Wednesday 7/27/1999: Huge blow for California's Sauerbeck, career over
CALIFORNIA - It was one of baseball saddest days. California's left-hander Scott Sauerbeck fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against New York (A) on Wednesday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Alex Ochoa, then suddenly collapsed. Sauerbeck was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Torn Bicep Muscle. Opposing players hit .200 against Scott this season. While posting an ERA of 5.58 he went 3-2 in 0 starts, fanning 33 and walking 21 hitters. His career featured a record of 13-5 with an ERA of 4.97. Baseball will certainly miss this great player.
Tuesday 7/26/1999: Chan Ho Park dominates St. Louis, gives up just 2 hits
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's right-hander Chan Ho Park is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. St. Louis found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Park 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 2nd shutouts in his career. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Park (11-1) struck out an astounding 13 and walked 2, throwing 65 of 104 pitches for strikes. Luis E. Gonzalez provided Milwaukee with the offense Park needed as he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, hitting a double, and driving in 4 runs. Milwaukee improved its record to 68-32, scoring 10 runs on 9 hits.
Monday 7/25/1999: Player of the Week honors go to Hamelin and Martinez
Bob Hamelin from Detroit wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Bob went 15 for 24 (.625), while hitting 6 HR and collecting 15 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. Edgar Martinez from Cincinnati wins his 9th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Martinez helped his team with an average of .600 and 13 RBI in 25 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. While compiling an on base percentage of .447, Edgar hit .353 and slugged .621. He has collected 73 runs batted in this year. He's 7th in the National League in batting!

Friday 7/22/1999: Vladimir Guerrero on fire, laces five hits
SAN DIEGO - Montreal's rightfielder Vladimir Guerrero once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up San Diego's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Friday. A 402 foot drive to left-center marked his 1st hit, a solo homerun off Andy Pettitte in the 1st inning. His 2nd hit, off Andy Pettitte in the 3rd inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in center field. He had singles in the 6th inning , in the 7th and in the 8th (two RBIs). Vladimir did drive in 4 while scoring 5 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 149 hits in 402 at bats, resulting in a .371 batting average. Montreal improved its record to 60-37, scoring 16 runs on 17 hits.
