PITTSBURGH - When it rains, it pours. Pittsburgh's right-hander Gary Eave will not pitch for at least 4-5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against San Francisco where he left the field in the 1st inning. Ruptured Bicep Tendon was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His ERA of 3.31 helped him to a 9-6 record this year. He struck out 150 and walked 57 in 146.2 innings.
Monday 8/15/1999: Ramirez (BOS) and Gonzalez (MIL) win P.O.W. award
It's the 7th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Boston's leftfielder Manny Ramirez. Manny pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .567 with 3 HR and 7 RBI while slugging .967. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 8 games. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Luis E. Gonzalez, Milwaukee's starting leftfielder. Gonzalez helped his team with an average of .375 and 14 RBI in 32 at bats. Luis E. managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. He now has homered in 6 consecutive games as well! This year Gonzalez drove in 115 and scored 92 runs while batting .307 with 38 longballs. He's 2nd in the National League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns!
Sunday 8/14/1999: St. Louis has no chance in a 2-hitter by Greg Maddux
ST. LOUIS - Atlanta's right-hander Greg Maddux is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking St. Louis on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 54th time he has done it in his career. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Maddux (17-3) fanned 9 and walked 2, throwing 111 pitches. Atlanta's shortstop Archi Cianfrocco went 2 for 5, homering once, with 4 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Maddux. Atlanta improved its record to 77-41, scoring 7 runs on 11 hits.
Friday 8/12/1999: Rob Richie clubs five hits in a game
COLORADO - Rob Richie hits 'em where they ain't. Colorado certainly agrees as Pittsburgh's centerfielder unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. A double off Bryan Eversgerd in the 2nd inning accounted for his 1st hit. In the 4th inning he belted a double off Bryan Eversgerd. His 3rd hit, a solo homerun off Sean Lowe in the 6th inning, cleared the fence in right-center. He had singles in the 7th and in the 9th . Rob did drive in one while scoring 3 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 145 hits in 416 at bats, resulting in a .349 batting average. Pittsburgh scored 6 runs on 14 hits.
Wednesday 8/10/1999: Boston's Johnny Damon gets the cycle
SEATTLE - Boston's centerfielder Johnny Damon accomplished a difficult feat in a game against Seattle, hitting for the cycle to improve his career batting average to .262! A pitch from Brian J. Anderson in the 3rd inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 425 feet from home plate in left-center. In the 5th inning he belted a double off Brian J. Anderson. Hit number 3 followed in the 6th inning, a two-run triple. A single in the 8th off Randy Choate accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Johnny scored one run, and he collected 3 RBI as well! He now has a total of 119 hits this season, accounting for a .290 batting average. He becomes the 101st player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. On 7/7/1999, Darin Erstad was the last player to hit for the cycle.

PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia is without its lefty Al Leiter for at least 5-6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Mike Devereaux in a game against Atlanta. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. In 0 starts this year Al struck out 35 batters in 57 innings of work. His ERA is 3.32, his record 0-2.
