SEATTLE - Hitting a homerun is fine, but hitting three of them in one game is something special. Toronto's catcher Joe Oliver accomplished that feat in a 16-0 win over Seattle. A pitch from Scott Sanders in the 2nd inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 374 feet from home plate in left-center. In the 3rd inning he unloaded a three-run homerun off Scott Sanders. His 3rd shot, off Matt Mantei in the 8th inning, was a GRAND SLAM and cleared the fence in left-center. Joe finished 3 for 4, with three runs scored with 9 RBI. His homerun total this year is 25, along with 101 RBI. On 8/21/1999, Derrek Lee was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game.
Monday 8/22/1999: Boston's Ramirez wins Player of the Week award
Boston's leftfielder Manny Ramirez had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Manny pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .542 with 2 HR and 3 RBI while slugging .917. Manny has gone 160 for 439 (.364) this season, hitting 35 longballs and driving in 103 runs. He has scored 88 runs on his own. He's 2nd in the American League in batting! The National League's best player of the week was San Diego's John Jaha, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. He hit .464 with 9 RBI and slugged 1.000 in 28 at bats.
Sunday 8/21/1999: Miguel Del Toro out for 4-5 weeks
SEATTLE - Seattle's right-hander Miguel Del Toro suffered a severe injury on Sunday and will be out for at least 4-5 weeks. In the 8th of the game against Toronto he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Ruptured Elbow Ligament. Miguel has a record of 3-0 this season, with an ERA of 10.63. In 42.1 Innings he was able to strike out 33 batters.
Thursday 8/18/1999: Chicago (A)'s Milt Cuyler mashes six hits
NEW YORK (A) - Milt Cuyler hits 'em where they ain't. New York (A) certainly agrees as Chicago (A)'s centerfielder unloaded six hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. He collected singles in the 1st , in the 3rd inning , in the 6th , in the 6th (one RBI) , in the 8th inning (one RBI) and in the 9th (one RBI). Milt did drive in 3 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .363. Chicago (A) improved its record to 89-34, scoring 23 runs on 25 hits.
Tuesday 8/16/1999: Philadelphia's Hunter out for 6 weeks
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's Torii Hunter suffered a serious injury Tuesday in a game against San Diego. Hunter fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 6 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Hunter was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Pulled Achilles Tendon. His season features a batting average of .234 (114 hits in 488 AB), 37 doubles, 2 triples and 7 bombs. Hunter collected 43 RBI and 61 runs as well.
