OAKLAND - When it rains, it pours. Oakland's right-hander Dan Wheeler will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Tampa Bay where he left the field in the 8th inning. Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. In 0 starts this year Dan struck out 33 batters in 40.2 innings of work. His ERA is 4.20, his record 1-1.
Monday 9/12/1999: New York (N)'s Miller severely injured
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s third baseman Orlando Miller hurt himself in the 5th inning while making a routine throw to first base. He experienced serious pain and had to leave the game. Orlando Miller will miss at least 5-6 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Tricep Muscle. Miller has hit 18 taters this year while batting .264. He adds 27 doubles, along with 59 runs scored.
Monday 9/12/1999: Player of the Week honors go to Griffey Jr. and Matsui
California's leftfielder Ken Griffey Jr. had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Ken pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .483 with 5 HR and 13 RBI while slugging 1.138. Ken managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. Griffey Jr. has hit 43 longballs this year while batting .311. He adds 45 doubles, along with 119 runs scored. New York (N)'s leftfielder Hideki Matsui had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. He hit .478 with 8 RBI and slugged 1.043 in 23 at bats.
Sunday 9/11/1999: Pete Harnisch dominates Los Angeles (N), gives up just 2 hits
LOS ANGELES (N) - Milwaukee's right-hander Pete Harnisch is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Los Angeles (N) on just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 4th time he has done it in his career. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Harnisch (14-12) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 2, throwing 101 pitches. Luis E. Gonzalez provided Milwaukee with the offense Harnisch needed as he collected 1 hit in 3 trips to the plate. Milwaukee improved its record to 98-45, scoring 1 run on 4 hits.
Thursday 9/8/1999: Andy Pettitte blanks Pittsburgh with a 2-hitter
SAN DIEGO - San Diego's left-hander Andy Pettitte is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Pittsburgh on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 3rd time he has done it in his career. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Pettitte (8-12) fanned 4 and walked none, throwing 89 pitches. Rusty Greer provided San Diego with the offense Pettitte needed as he stroked 2 hits in 3 AB, blasting a homerun, and driving in 2 runs. The final score of the game was 2-0.
Thursday 9/8/1999: Florida's Garey Ingram gets the cycle
FLORIDA - Garey Ingram hits 'em where they ain't. St. Louis certainly agrees as Florida's second baseman unloaded four hits and hitting for the cycle. A single in the 1st off Gabe White accounted for his 1st hit. Number 2 in the 3rd inning, a shot estimated at 352 feet, cleared the wall in left field. Hit number 3 followed in the 5th inning, a triple. A two-run double off Ken Robinson in the 7th inning accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Garey did drive in 4 while scoring 4 runs on his own. He now has a total of 62 hits this season, accounting for a .274 batting average. He's now the 102nd player in league history to hit for the cycle! On 8/10/1999, Johnny Damon was the last player to hit for the cycle.
