Monday 5/9/2000: Jason Giambi uncorks five hits against New York (N)
NEW YORK (N) - Jason Giambi punished New York (N)'s pitching today, collecting five hits in 6 AB. That definitely helped Pittsburgh, they won the game 18 to 2. In the 1st inning he belted a double off Rick White. Number 2 in the 3rd inning, a shot estimated at 455 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. A double off John Thomson in the 4th inning accounted for his 3rd hit. In the 6th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Chad Zerbe. He had a single in the 5th, driving in one run. Jason did drive in 5 while scoring 4 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 39 hits in 120 at bats, resulting in a .325 batting average.
Monday 5/9/2000: Matt Morris out for 5 weeks
KANSAS CITY - When it rains, it pours. Kansas City's right-hander Matt Morris will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Oakland where he left the field in the 7th inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Ruptured Bicep Tendon. Surgery will be performed next week. In 7 starts this year Matt struck out 35 batters in 43.2 innings of work. His ERA is 5.56, his record 3-3.
Monday 5/9/2000: Chicago (A)'s Williams wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Bernie F. Williams, Chicago (A)'s starting rightfielder. Bernie F. was on fire, hitting .667 with 5 HR and 17 RBI. The National League's best player of the week was Montreal's Matt Stairs, who wins the award for the 10th time in his career. Matt pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .538 with 2 HR and 6 RBI while slugging 1.000. His season numbers are: .386 AVG, 49 hits, 9 doubles, one triple and 8 taters, along with 25 RBI and 29 runs scored. He's 1st in the National League in batting!
Sunday 5/8/2000: Robb Nen quiets Tampa Bay bats with shutout
TAMPA BAY - Minnesota's right-hander Robb Nen is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Tampa Bay found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Nen 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 13th shutouts in his career. With no outs in the 6th inning Brian Schneider singled to break up the no-hitter. Nen (4-2) struck out an astounding 13 and walked none, throwing 76 of 107 pitches for strikes. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' The hitting star for Minnesota was designated hitter Mo Vaughn, he finished with 2 hits in 5 AB. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Friday 5/6/2000: Chicago (A)'s Bernie F. Williams ropes six hits
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s rightfielder Bernie F. Williams once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Oakland's pitching staff with a 6 hit performance on Friday. His 2nd hit, a solo homerun off Brian Dubois in the 3rd inning, cleared the fence in left field. A pitch from Dan Wheeler in the 4th inning left his bat for a RBI double. A RBI double off Mike DeJean in the 5th inning accounted for his 4th hit. In the 8th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Brian Moehler. He collected singles in the 1st inning and in the 7th (one RBI). Bernie F. did drive in 5 while scoring 4 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .359. Chicago (A) scored 16 runs on 22 hits.
Wednesday 5/4/2000: Wilson Alvarez (CHA) will miss 5-6 weeks
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s southpaw Wilson Alvarez suffered a severe injury on Wednesday and will be out for at least 5-6 weeks. In the 5th of the game against California he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Chicago (A) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Alvarez had suffered a Spasms Back. This season Alvarez compiled an ERA of 1.86, going 4-0 in 7 starts. He fanned 41 while giving up 46 hits in 48.1 innings. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 3rd in wins!
