HOUSTON - Houston's right-hander Gary Glover is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Pittsburgh found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Glover 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 2nd shutouts in his career. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Glover (2-4) struck out 5 and walked 2, throwing 72 of 118 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Houston was shortstop Omar Vizquel, he went 2 for 3, blasting a homerun, scoring twice and collecting 2 RBI. Houston scored 4 runs on 6 hits.
Monday 5/23/2000: Jim Abbott blanks Colorado with a 2-hitter
ATLANTA - Atlanta's left-hander Jim Abbott is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Colorado on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 7th time he has done it in his career. Abbott (8-2) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 3. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Atlanta's shortstop Archi Cianfrocco got 3 hits in 3 AB, doubling twice, and collecting 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Abbott. Atlanta scored 4 runs on 10 hits.
Monday 5/23/2000: Ventura and Stanley win Player of the Week award
Robin Ventura from Detroit wins his 8th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Robin went 14 for 25 (.560), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 9 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 15 games. While compiling an on base percentage of .389, Robin hit .322 and slugged .574. He has collected 38 runs batted in this year. The National League's best player of the week was Atlanta's Mike Stanley, who wins the award for the 4th time in his career. In 28 at bats he hit .429 with 4 HR and 10 RBI.
Sunday 5/22/2000: Ron Coomer found the stroke, smashes three homers
KANSAS CITY - Ron Coomer was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Chicago (A) to a 12-7 win over Kansas City by homering three times. His 1st shot, off Mike Williams in the 2nd inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left field. His 2nd blast, a solo homerun off Tim Van Egmond in the 8th inning, landed an estimated 418 feet from home plate. The game was tied, 5-5, after the blast. His 3rd shot, a two-run homerun off Kevin Appier in the 13th inning, cleared the fence in left field. Ron finished 3 for 5, scoring three runs and collecting 4 RBI. Jose Vidro was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 5/21/2000.
Saturday 5/21/2000: Jose Vidro homers three times against Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA - Hitting homeruns is one of the most difficult things in sports. To hit three of them in one game is almost sensational. Colorado's second baseman Jose Vidro accomplished that feat in a 7-5 win over Philadelphia. A 430 foot drive to right-center marked his 1st bomb, a two-run homerun off Satoru Komiyama in the 6th inning. His 2nd shot, off Satoru Komiyama in the 8th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in center field. That one tied it at 5 runs apiece. Number 3 in the 10th inning, a shot estimated at 383 feet, cleared the wall in right field. Jose got 3 hits in 5 AB, scoring three times with 5 RBI. Willie Greene was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 5/14/2000. Colorado improved its record to 25-20, scoring 7 runs on 9 hits.
Saturday 5/21/2000: Toronto's Clemens severely injured
TORONTO - Toronto's right-hander Roger Clemens experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 1st inning of the game against Texas, Clemens complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Torn Ligament Elbow which will require surgery. In 11 starts this year Roger struck out 42 batters in 56 innings of work. His ERA is 3.38, his record 4-0.
Friday 5/20/2000: Tony Fiore (ARZ) will miss full season
ARIZONA - Arizona's right-hander Tony Fiore will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against Atlanta on Friday. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Bone Chips Shoulder. Surgery will be performed next week. Opposing players hit .206 against Tony this season. While posting an ERA of 0.49 he went 1-0 in 0 starts, fanning 11 and walking 7 hitters.
Wednesday 5/18/2000: Greg Maddux turns in great performance against San Diego
SAN DIEGO - Atlanta's right-hander Greg Maddux is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. San Diego found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Maddux 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 57th shutouts in his career. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Maddux (9-0) struck out 7 and walked 1, throwing 71 of 109 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Atlanta was shortstop Todd Haney, he got 3 hits in 5 AB, homering once, with 4 RBI. Atlanta improved its record to 33-9, scoring 12 runs on 15 hits.

SAN DIEGO - Atlanta's right-hander Greg Maddux gained immortality by recording his 300th win in the big leagues. Greg Maddux threw 109 pitches in 9 innings, 71 for strikes. He allowed 0 earned runs while striking out 1 and walking 0 earned runs. His career features a 1.95 ERA, along with 2711 K's in 3733 innings. 'I'm out of words. I'll probably realize it tomorrow, but for now I'm done.' He set a career high with 26 wins in 1993. Maddux won 20 or more games a season 10 times. The Hall of Fame is already waiting for this great player.
