NEW YORK (N) - Atlanta's right-hander John Smoltz is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. New York (N) found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Smoltz 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 55th shutouts in his career. Smoltz (11-0) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 1, throwing 106 pitches. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Edgar Renteria provided Atlanta with the offense Smoltz needed as he got 2 hits in 5 AB, hitting 2 doubles. Atlanta improved its record to 45-10, scoring 3 runs on 10 hits.
Wednesday 6/1/2000: California's Smoltz named Pitcher of the Month
Kenny Rogers pitched like a legend in May, and the American League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He went 6-0 in May and finished the month with an ERA of 0.37. PITTSBURGH - San Francisco's players had every reason to congratulate Tony Fernandez, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! With two outs in the 4th inning, Tony drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. Along with his 2000 hits, Tony collected 128 homeruns and 900 RBI in 15 seasons. 'Good things happen when you put the bat on the ball.'
Monday 5/30/2000: Belle (DET) and White (CHN) win P.O.W. award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Albert Belle, Detroit's starting leftfielder. Albert went 12 for 24 (.500), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 6 RBI. It's the 2nd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Chicago (N)'s centerfielder Rondell White. Rondell went 11 for 27 (.407), while hitting 5 HR and collecting 16 RBI. Saturday 5/28/2000: Oakland's Dubois severely injured
OAKLAND - Oakland's lefty Brian Dubois suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 3rd of the game against Tampa Bay he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Spasms Back. His ERA of 6.32 helped him to a 2-8 record this year. He struck out 57 and walked 16 in 68.1 innings.
Thursday 5/26/2000: Erik Hanson shuts out St. Louis on 2 hits
SAN FRANCISCO - Erik Hanson took the mound and never left. And St. Louis hitters couldn't touch him at all. San Francisco's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 8 career shutouts in 275 games started. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Hanson (7-3) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 4. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 11th time he has done it in his career. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.'
