KANSAS CITY - Chris Carpenter took the mound and never left. And Oakland hitters couldn't touch him at all. Kansas City's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 4 career shutouts in 95 games started. With two outs in the 6th inning Mark McGwire doubled to break up the no-hitter. Carpenter (5-3) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 5. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' The hitting star for Kansas City was The final score of the game was 5-0.
Monday 6/6/2000: Milwaukee's Rhodes wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Gary Sheffield, Toronto's starting third baseman. Sheffield helped his team with an average of .567 and 9 RBI in 30 at bats. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. Gary has gone 61 for 180 (.339) this season, hitting 7 longballs and driving in 23 runs. He has scored 48 runs on his own. He's 6th in the American League in batting! The National League's best player of the week was Milwaukee's Arthur Rhodes, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Rhodes was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Saturday 6/4/2000: Roy Halladay blanks Cincinnati with a 2-hitter
FLORIDA - Florida's right-hander Roy Halladay will never forget this day. The 23-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Cincinnati on Saturday. Halladay (6-7) fanned 7 and walked 1, throwing 109 pitches. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Eric Young Sr. provided Florida with the offense Halladay needed as he stroked 4 hits in 4 AB, doubling twice, with three runs scored and collecting 2 RBI. Florida improved its record to 40-17, scoring 11 runs on 14 hits.
Saturday 6/4/2000: It's NO-NO time for Arthur Rhodes against Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA - Milwaukee's left-hander Arthur Rhodes made some history today, firing a no-hitter against Philadelphia. Their hitters found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, never having a chance against his overpowering stuff. Atsuya Furuta spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with 1 away in the 6th inning. Rhodes (7-4) fanned 6 and walked 1, throwing 114 pitches. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Kazuhiro Kiyohara helped Rhodes at the plate, he got 2 hits in 5 AB, blasting a homerun, doubling once, with 5 RBI. The final score of the game was 9-0.
