BOSTON - Randy D. Johnson had some fun again. Boston hitters did not. Chicago (A)'s lefty gave up just one hit in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 44 career shutouts in 429 games started. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Johnson (17-3) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking none, throwing 98 pitches. The hitting star for Chicago (A) was first baseman Frank E. Thomas, he got 2 hits in 5 AB, hitting a homerun, scoring 2 runs and collecting 4 RBI. Chicago (A) improved its record to 72-29, scoring 10 runs on 12 hits.
Tuesday 7/26/2000: John Smoltz blanks San Diego with a 1-hitter
SAN DIEGO - John Smoltz had some fun again. San Diego hitters did not. Atlanta's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 56 career shutouts in 461 games started. Smoltz (18-0) struck out an astounding 14 and walked 2, throwing 76 of 113 pitches for strikes. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' The hitting star for Atlanta was centerfielder Roger Cedeno, he stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, homering once. Atlanta improved its record to 80-20, scoring 5 runs on 10 hits.
Tuesday 7/26/2000: Texas' Derek Bell slams five hits
SEATTLE - Derek Bell led Texas to a 19-2 win over Seattle by squeezing five hits out of his bat. A pitch from Scott Wiggins in the 2nd inning left his bat for a RBI double. That one tied it at 1 runs apiece. A pitch from Scott Wiggins in the 4th inning left his bat for a double. A pitch from Bartolo Colon in the 6th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 373 feet from home plate in left field. Number 5 in the 8th inning accounted for a double. He collected a single in the 5th. Derek did drive in 2 while scoring 4 runs on his own. He now has a total of 98 hits this season, accounting for a .234 batting average.
Tuesday 7/26/2000: Kansas City's Morris out for 5 weeks
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City is without its right-hander Matt Morris for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Todd Hundley in a game against California. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Morris was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Torn Bicep Muscle. In 15 starts this year Matt struck out 55 batters in 88.1 innings of work. His ERA is 5.50, his record 6-6.
Monday 7/25/2000: Ellis Burks on fire, hits for cycle
FLORIDA - Florida's third baseman Ellis Burks accomplished a difficult feat in a game against Colorado, hitting for the cycle to improve his career batting average to .300! A single in the 1st off Gil Meche accounted for his 1st hit. Hit number 2 followed in the 3rd inning, a triple. His 3rd hit, a solo homerun off Gil Meche in the 4th inning, landed an estimated 405 feet from home plate. In the 7th inning he belted a double off Bryan Eversgerd. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Ellis scored 4 runs, and he collected one RBI as well! His 4 hit performance increases his batting average to .325. He's now the 105th player in league history to hit for the cycle! Brady Anderson was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 4/24/2000.
Monday 7/25/2000: Sanchez and Lankford win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Rey Sanchez, Cleveland's starting centerfielder. Rey pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .480 with 4 HR and 9 RBI while slugging 1.120. Sanchez has hit 21 homeruns this year while batting .305. He adds 16 doubles, along with 54 runs scored. It's the 3rd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Pittsburgh's leftfielder Ray Lankford. In 19 at bats he hit .526 with 5 HR and 11 RBI. Lankford has hit 28 bombs this year while batting .269. He adds 19 doubles, along with 73 runs scored.
Saturday 7/23/2000: Russell Branyan parks three against Chicago (A)
DETROIT - Russell Branyan powered Detroit to a 9-6 win over Chicago (A). He did it in style by homering three times. Number 1 in the 3rd inning, a shot estimated at 383 feet, cleared the wall in right-center. The game was tied, 2-2, after the blast. His 2nd blast, a two-run homerun off Curt Schilling in the 5th inning, landed an estimated 376 feet from home plate. In the 7th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Curt Schilling. It tied the ballgame at 6. Russell collected 4 hits in 5 trips to the plate, scoring three times with 5 RBI. So far this season he is batting .289 with 35 homers and 86 RBI.
