The Greatest Teams of the 90’s
5. Toronto - 1056 wins, 1 WS, honerable mention 4. Possibly one of the most prolific teams of the 90’s was the Angles, built by GM youwillovette, and then taken over by Darryl, the Angels won 1060 games during the 90’s and have had a many a great pitcher during that stretch, but perhaps the best of the group was Jeff Peterek who had 189 wins for the decade. Their lineup has had to morph for salaries, but the mainstays of the 90’s were Griffey, Hundley and perhaps the best batter in the league during the stretch, Chipper Jones. California won the AL West 6 times in the 90’s 3. Atlanta has had the same GM since 77 and during the 90’s they won the NL East every season, and had 1078 wins. They also had at least 100 wins in every season. Atlanta was lead by John Smoltz and Greg Maddux on the mound for the entire 90’s but also had the great Don Robinson for all but the 99 season. During the 90’s Don had 137 wins to go with 203 by Maddux and 221 by Smoltz. Greg and John also won the Cy Young award in 7 of the seasons. The Braves lineup has been a hodgepodge over the 90’s with perhaps the fleet footed Stan Javier being the only one to be there for the entire decade. 2. San Francisco has been led by the immortal GM S. Martin since inception? During the 90’s they racked up an incredible 1136 wins. They have been led by Bonds, ever since he arrived. San Fran won the West nine of the ten seasons, but went to the playoff each season. Their Achilles heal seems to be the White Sox, good thing there wasn’t interleague play during the 90’s. 1. The White Sox have managed to continually find the right teams to fleece for top notch pitching to keep the machine turning. They cranked out 1065 wins during the 90’s just barely edging out the Angles. Also only winning their division 6 times, but they made the most of the postseasons. The Sox built their pitching around the Big Unit, and Randy had 198 wins for the 90’s. I believe Mark also has run the team since inception. Going into writing this, I would never had guessed Smoltz had so many more wins than Maddux. The White Sox had 4 WS rings for the 90’s in 5 tries, San Fran 2 in 5 tries, Atlanta was 2 for 2, and California was 0-3. The most wins for the decade, San Fran. Most division pennants, Atlanta. |
