It's the 2nd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Detroit's centerfielder Dmitri Young. In 25 at bats he hit .400 with 6 HR and 15 RBI. Ellis Burks from Florida wins his 5th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. In 29 at bats he hit .621 with 2 HR and 10 RBI.
Sunday 8/14/2000: 5-hit performance by Atlanta's Todd Haney
CHICAGO (N) - Todd Haney hits 'em where they ain't. Chicago (N) certainly agrees as Atlanta's shortstop unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. Number 1 in the 2nd inning accounted for a RBI double. Number 3 in the 6th inning accounted for a double. His 4th hit, a two-run homerun off Ron Blazier in the 8th inning, cleared the fence in right field. He had singles in the 4th Todd scored 3 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! He now has a total of 67 hits this season, accounting for a .261 batting average. Atlanta scored 9 runs on 19 hits.
Tuesday 8/9/2000: Randy Hennis out for full season
HOUSTON - Houston's right-hander Randy Hennis experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 7th inning of the game against Atlanta, Hennis complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Bone Chips Shoulder was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Randy has a record of 11-6 this season, with an ERA of 3.83. In 162.1 Innings he was able to strike out 53 batters. Randy has pitched one shutout and 4 complete games.
Tuesday 8/9/2000: Detroit's Aquino out for 5-6 weeks
DETROIT - Detroit's right-hander Luis Aquino suffered a severe injury on Tuesday and will be out for at least 5-6 weeks. In the 8th of the game against Texas he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being taken to a local hospital, Aquino was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Herniated Disc Back. Opposing players hit .246 against Luis this season. While posting an ERA of 3.82 he went 10-7 in 21 starts, fanning 60 and walking 84 hitters. Luis has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games.

CLEVELAND - When it rains, it pours. Cleveland's right-hander Pete Walker will not pitch for at least 4-5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Baltimore where he left the field in the 3rd inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle. This season Walker compiled an ERA of 5.04, going 5-13 in 25 starts. He fanned 66 while giving up 153 hits in 141 innings.
