Monday 8/22/2000: Player of the Week honors go to Delgado and Stairs
It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Seattle's first baseman Carlos Delgado. Delgado helped his team with an average of .444 and 12 RBI in 27 at bats. The National League's best player of the week was Montreal's Matt Stairs, who wins the award for the 11th time in his career. Matt went 13 for 21 (.619), while hitting 1 HR and collecting 14 RBI.
Wednesday 8/17/2000: Minnesota's Russ Davis goes deep three times
TEXAS - Minnesota's shortstop Russ Davis flexed his muscles and displayed his tremendous power, homering three times in a 8-4 win over Texas. A pitch from Chad Ogea in the 3rd inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 437 feet from home plate in center field. A 415 foot drive to left-center marked his 2nd bomb, a three-run homerun off Ricky Trlicek in the 7th inning. Number 3 in the 9th inning, a shot estimated at 390 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. Russ collected 3 hits in 5 trips to the plate, scoring three times and collecting 6 RBI. The final score of the game was 8-4.
Wednesday 8/17/2000: Joey Hamilton out for full season
OAKLAND - Oakland's right-hander Joey Hamilton experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 8th inning of the game against Kansas City, Hamilton complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Tricep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. This season Hamilton compiled an ERA of 6.29, going 8-14 in 30 starts. He fanned 78 while giving up 163 hits in 146 innings.
Tuesday 8/16/2000: Texas' Kendall severely injured
TEXAS - Texas' season has taken a hit after one of their best players, catcher Jason Kendall, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 5 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Kendall was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Strained Anterior Cruciate Ligament. His season numbers are: .274 AVG, 108 hits, 21 doubles, 4 triples and 6 taters, along with 48 RBI and 63 runs scored.
