And now it's time to see how the NL teams did in our most recent draft.
NL East
Chicago Cubs:
1st Round Pick: 3B Shigeo Nagashima
2nd Round Pick: P Pete Richert
3rd Round Pick: P Ron Herbel
4th Round Pick: P Jack D. Warner
5th Round Pick: 2B Pedro Gonzalez
Shigeo Nagashima could turn into one of HOFFBL's next offensive superstars.
With the 2nd overall pick in the draft, Matt A. selected Shigeo Nagashima as one of his future cornerstone players. Nagashima can do it all, with good talents in hits, home runs and walks, plus very good speed and excellent defensive range. It looks as if Nagashima recently got called up to the major leagues and will likely be manning the hot corner for the Cubs for years to come. The one negative with Nagashima though is his strong winning desire. By the time he goes through his arbitration years, he will likely demand a big salary, but if the Cubs are not competing by the time that happens, Matt may be forced to trade him away. We will have to see how that goes, but great pick for sure!
In the 2nd round, Matt selected Pete Richert, who could certainly use a walks talent increase to be a great pitcher. Richert though might be extra pitching depth for Matt at this point, with how loaded his farm system is. For an early 2nd round pick, this was certainly solid.
Matt's 3rd round pick was Ron Herbel. Herbel could be a decent reliever, but will probably need some PD help to be particularly useful. Still for an early 3rd round pick, this was good.
4th round pick Jack D. Warner is somewhat in the same mold of Herbel, which the exception that his good talent is in home runs, while Herbel's is in walks. 5th round pick Pedro Gonzalez recently got a nice PD and could eventually become useful for Matt.
Matt had an excellent draft, and definitely one of, if not the best draft of anyone this season. Well done!

Cubs 1958 Draft Grade: A
Philadelphia Phillies:
1st Round Pick: CF Teolindo Acosta
2nd Round Pick: 1B Ron Fairly
3rd Round Pick: P Bob Sadowski
4th Round Pick: P Dennis Higgins
5th Round Pick: 1B Rick Herrscher
With his 1st round pick, Oren selected Teolindo Acosta 8th overall. Acosta could become the Phillies' leadoff hitter of the future once ages catches up to Richie Ashburn. He will also provide very good defense across the entire outfield. He is a very solid mid-1st round pick.
In the 2nd round, Oren selected Ron Fairly. Fairly will need a hits talent increase to be useful, but could very solid depth at the very least.
Bob Sadowski was then Oren's 3rd round pick. Sadowski could turn into a nice pitcher if he gets a hits talent increase of his own. He's also loyal, which is certainly a plus.
4th round pick Dennis Higgins could be a decent reliever, but is fair in walks and has the very inconsistent/suffers combination for consistency and clutch, which I have never liked at all. 5th round pick Rick Herrscher could be decent utility backup at best.
Oren's draft was solid overall and he drafted what should be three useful players for him within the first 3 rounds.
Phillies 1958 1st Round Pick Grade: A
Phillies 1958 Draft Grade: A
Pittsburgh Pirates:
1st Round Pick: CF Mack Jones
2nd Round Pick: P Dick Ellsworth
3rd Round Pick: P Jim B. Weaver
3rd Round Pick: P John Boozer
4th Round Pick: P Bob Priddy
5th Round Pick: 1B Danny Cater
Mack Jones should be one of the best hitters from this draft class.
I took Mack Jones with the 4th overall pick, but I immediately realized I should have taken Tom Haller instead. Oh well. I recently increased Jones' hits to turn him into a stud. He now joins a long list of Pirates' stud prospects.
My 2nd round pick went to Dick Ellsworth who could be more useful with a hits talent increase for sure. I may do that for him at some point. We'll see. a duration and good consistency re nice plus's to have.
I had the Red Sox' 3rd round pick in addition to my own. I used my own 3rd on Jim Weaver and the Red Sox 3rd on John Boozer. Both of them need hits talent increases to be better pitchers, but they are decent depth at the very least.
4th round pick Bob Priddy is extra depth and Danny Cater is backup material.
I like my draft a lot altogether, but definitely wish I had Haller more than Jones.
Pirates 1958 1st Round Pick Grade: A-
Pirates 1958 Draft Grade: A
St. Louis Cardinals:
1st Round Pick: P Ray Sadecki
2nd Round Pick: SS Dick Howser
3rd Round Pick: 3B Mike Shannon
4th Round Pick: 2B Jerry Adair
5th Round Pick: RF Jose Vidal
Matt C.'s draft started with selecting Ray Sadecki 9th overall. Sadecki looks like a solid pitcher already and the only thing he really needs to improve at this point is his duration.
Matt's 2nd round pick, Dick Howser could be a very nice SS with a hits talent increase. He's got good speed and great character ratings as well. Very nice 2nd round pick there for sure.
3rd round pick Mike Shannon could be good infield depth at least, if not a starter with some PD help. You can't blame Matt for taking a real Cardinals' lifer though.
4th round pick Jerry Adair looks like to be backup material, while 5th round pick Jose Vidal will probably be even further down the depth chart.
Matt's draft wasn't particularly fancy, but it was pretty good nonetheless.

NL West
Cincinnati Reds:
1st Round Pick: P Phil Niekro
2nd Round Pick: P Bob Hendley
3rd Round Pick: 3B Pete Ward
4th Round Pick: 3B Max Alvis
5th Round Pick: P Larry Maxie
Knuckleballer Phil Niekro could turn into one of HOFFBL's next great pitchers with his unique pitch.
With the 6th overall pick, Jeff selected Phil "Knucksie" Niekro to be a potential future ace for the Reds. Niekro is a kunckleballer and there aren't too many of them, so it will be interesting to see if the opposing hitters struggle against the knuckleball.
In the 2nd round, Jeff got Bob Hendley, who could turn into another good pitcher for the Reds. Hendley could use a talent increase for his home runs, but should at least be a solid reliever.
Jeff's 3rd round pick Pete Ward needs a talent increase in his hits to be better, but he's a decent utility backup at the very least. Ward is also loyal, which is nice and should provide solid defense.
4th round pick Max Alvis could be decent depth, but has already suffered a bad PD to his home runs and 5th round pick Larry Maxie will need some PD help to ever reach the major leagues.
Jeff's draft was good generally speaking and he got a few arms that should help his pitching in the future.
Reds 1958 1st Round Pick Grade: A-
Reds 1958 Draft Grade: B+
Los Angeles Dodgers:
1st Round Pick: P Eddie Fisher
2nd Round Pick: P Diego Segui
3rd Round Pick: 3B Don Wert
4th Round Pick: LF Charlie James
5th Round Pick: P Ron Nischwitz
Jeremy began his draft by selecting Eddie Fisher near the end of the 1st round. Fisher is a bit on the older side, but could turn into good pitching depth for a team as loaded as the Dodgers are.
Jeremy then used his 2nd round pick on Diego Segui, who could use a hits talent increase and some duration work, but looks to be a decent future reliever at this point.
In the 3rd round, Jeremy selected Don Wert, who has already gotten talent increases in home runs and strikeouts. Regardless, Wert will probably be a loyal backup in the future.
4th round pick Charlie James and 5th round pick Ron Nischwitz both aren't terrible, but both probably will not end up being regular starters either.
Jeremy's draft was decent for his draft position, but it's not like he really needed that much more talent anyway.
Dodgers 1958 1st Round Pick Grade: B+
Dodgers 1958 Draft Grade: B
Milwaukee Braves:
1st Round Pick: P Don Schwall
2nd Round Pick: LF Tom Tresh
3rd Round Pick: P Dooley Womack
4th Round Pick: C Doc Edwards
5th Round Pick: 1B Tommie Aaron
Steve chose Don Schwall 12th overall with his 1st round pick and immediately increased his talent in walks to good. Schwall is already 22, but could still turn into a great pitcher in the future with those ratings he has.
In the 2nd round, Steve selected Tom Tresh, who could definitely be a super utility player for the Braves in the future. The only positions he has yet to learn are 1B and 2B. A talent increase in hits could make him a future starter as well.
Steve's 3rd round pick was Dooley Womack, who looks to be a very good future reliever for the Braves. Steve could also spend a few seasons to get him to A duration and then convert him into a starter, so we'll see if he ends up doing that.
4th round pick Doc Edwards could be a future backup catcher and it's only appropriate that 5th round pick Tommie Aaron gets drafted to the same team his older brother plays on. This Aaron though will probably not turn into the same kind of player as Hank.
Steve had a good draft overall and could potentially have 3 very useful players in the future.
Braves 1958 1st Round Pick Grade: A-
Braves 1958 Draft Grade: A-
San Francisco Giants:
1st Round Pick: P Bob Veale
1st Round Pick: P Steve Hamilton
2nd Round Pick: CF Vic Davalillo
3rd Round Pick: RF Earl Robinson
4th Round Pick: C Jerry McNertney
5th Round Pick: CF Billy Cowan
With his own 1st round pick, Spencer selected Bob Veale and after immediately increasing his walks talent, he traded him to the Yankees. Spencer before though traded for the Yankees' 1st round pick, which he used to get Steve Hamilton. Hamilton fits nearly the same mold as Veale regarding his age and talent ratings (getting a talent increase in home runs certainly has helped), but the only difference now is that Hamilton's duration isn't as high. Hamilton should still turn into a very good pitcher though.
In the 2nd round, Spencer selected Vic Davalillo, who could become a useful leadoff hitter one day with a talent increase to his hits and a running speed increase to B. He also has nice defensive range ratings everywhere.
Spencer's 3rd round pick Earl Robinson has already benefited from a talent increase to his hits and strikeouts, which now could make him certainly useful for the Giants in the future.
4th round pick Jerry McNertney looks to be an eventual backup catcher and 5th round pick Billy Cowan will be fortunate to ever get to the major leagues, if he ever does.
Spencer's draft looks a little better right now than it actually was thanks to a few timely PD increases, but he still had a solid draft regardless.
