Loretta helped his team with an average of .357 and 38 RBI in 98 at bats. His season numbers are: .301 AVG, 139 hits, 22 doubles, 2 triples and 33 homeruns, along with 118 RBI and 90 runs scored. Montreal's leftfielder Matt Stairs had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. Matt went 41 for 93 (.441), while hitting 5 HR and collecting 31 RBI. Stairs has walked 70 times this year and posts a .440 OBP. While batting .355, 173 for 488, he has driven in 113 runs. He's 2nd in the National League in batting and 4th in RBI!
Wednesday 8/31/2000: Kevin Young on fire, hits for cycle
COLORADO - Kevin Young hits 'em where they ain't. Houston certainly agrees as Colorado's designated hitter unloaded five hits and hitting for the cycle. In the 2nd inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Ben McDonald. A single in the 3rd off Ben McDonald accounted for his 2nd hit. A pitch from Russ Springer in the 4th inning left his bat for a double. A single in the 6th off Brian Lawrence accounted for his 4th hit. A pitch from Justin Thompson in the 7th inning left his bat for a two-run triple. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Kevin did drive in 4 while scoring 2 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 144 hits in 430 at bats, resulting in a .335 batting average. 107 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Kevin. A single in the 1st off Tim Hudson accounted for his 1st hit. In the 3rd inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Tim Hudson. A triple off Tim Hudson in the 6th inning, accounted for his 3rd hit. Number 4 in the 8th inning accounted for a double. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Vladimir did drive in one while scoring 3 runs on his own. He is hitting .330 this season, with 34 HR and 112 RBI. 106 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Vladimir. FLORIDA - Ivan Rodriguez got a standing ovation from 40501 fans in Florida, who witnessed his 2000th career hit. In 11 years of big league action so far, Ivan has compiled a batting average of .306, along with 159 homeruns and 900 RBI. 'I'm out of words. I'll probably realize it tomorrow, but for now I'm done.' CHICAGO (A) - Frank E. Thomas got a standing ovation from 64310 fans in Chicago (A), who witnessed his 2000th career hit. He hit a single in the 4th off Keith Foulke for number 2000. His best year so far was 1999 where he hit .326 with 44 homeruns and 131 RBI. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!'
Thursday 8/25/2000: New York (A)'s Stanford out for 5 weeks
NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s right-hander Larry Stanford suffered a severe injury on Thursday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 6th of the game against California he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Stanford was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Strained Tricep Muscle. In 27 starts this year Larry struck out 102 batters in 136.2 innings of work. His ERA is 5.73, his record 3-12.
Thursday 8/25/2000: Detroit's Mark Loretta goes deep three times
SEATTLE - Mark Loretta was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Detroit to a 15-2 win over Seattle by homering three times. His 1st shot, a two-run homerun off Brian J. Anderson in the 2nd inning, cleared the fence in left-center. A pitch from Brian J. Anderson in the 4th inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 391 feet from home plate in left-center. His 3rd shot, off Scott Linebrink in the 8th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left field. Mark went 4 for 4, scoring FOUR times and driving in 5 runs.
