Monday 4/18/2003: Cabrera and Richie win Player of the Week award
Miguel Cabrera from Detroit wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. He had an on base percentage of .552 and hit .519, while driving in 7 runs. St. Louis' centerfielder Rob Richie had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Richie helped his team with an average of .630 and 4 RBI in 27 at bats. Rob has gone 24 for 62 (.387) this season, hitting no homeruns and driving in 6 runs. He has scored 9 runs on his own. He's 1st in the National League in batting!
Friday 4/15/2003: Manny Ramirez slams 3 HR
MINNESOTA - Manny Ramirez was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Minnesota to a 9-3 win over Oakland by homering three times. A 343 foot drive to left field marked his 1st bomb, a solo homerun off Wandy Rodriguez in the 1st inning. Number 2 in the 3rd inning, a shot estimated at 442 feet, cleared the wall in center field. A pitch from Scot Shields in the 7th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 354 feet from home plate in left field. Manny finished with 3 hits in 3 AB, with FOUR runs scored and collecting 4 RBI. His homerun total this year is 5, along with 9 RBI. The induction into the Hall of Fame is almost a sure thing for him now! On 9/12/2002, Edgardo Alfonzo was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game.
Thursday 4/14/2003: Andy Pettitte blanks Los Angeles (A) with a 1-hitter
LOS ANGELES (A) - Andy Pettitte took the mound and never left. And Los Angeles (A) hitters couldn't touch him at all. Kansas City's left-hander gave up just one hit in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 8 career shutouts in 264 games started. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Pettitte (2-1) struck out 4 and issued 1 BB, throwing 66 of 100 pitches for strikes. Kansas City's third baseman Jason Giambi collected 3 hits in 5 trips to the plate, blasting a homerun, doubling once, and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Pettitte. The final score of the game was 8-0.
Wednesday 4/13/2003: Tim Hudson (FLA) will miss 5 weeks
FLORIDA - Florida is without its ace Tim Hudson for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Johnny Damon in a game against Chicago (N). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Ruptured Elbow Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials.

CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A) is without its right-hander Steve Phoenix for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Jim Edmonds in a game against Minnesota. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Strained Tricep Muscle which will require surgery.
Monday 4/11/2003: Rodriguez and Martinez win Player of the Week award
New York (A)'s shortstop Alex Rodriguez had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Rodriguez helped his team with an average of .552 and 7 RBI in 29 at bats. He has hit one bomb while batting .500 this season. His 17 hits and 1 walks add up to a .528 on-base percentage. He's 1st in the American League in batting! The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Atlanta's Tino Martinez this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Tino went 9 for 25 (.360), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 11 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 8 game hitting streak right now.
Friday 4/8/2003: Chipper Jones stars with 2000th career hit
LOS ANGELES (A) - Los Angeles (A)'s Chipper Jones showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Seattle on Friday. In 11 years of big league action so far, Chipper has compiled a batting average of .314, along with 397 homeruns and 1144 RBI. 'Wow. That is all I can say now. I'm thrilled.' He hit a triple in the 3rd off Paul Wagner for number 2000.
Tuesday 4/5/2003: Kevin Rogers blanks New York (N) with a 1-hitter
NEW YORK (N) - Good things can happen when you throw strikes. And Kevin Rogers did so today, in a 1-hit shutout against New York (N). 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Rogers (1-0) struck out an astounding 13 and walked 2, throwing 71 of 114 pitches for strikes. Florida's second baseman Todd Haney finished 3 for 5, and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Rogers. Florida improved its record to 1-2, scoring 9 runs on 10 hits.
Sunday 4/3/2003: Dwight Gooden turns in great performance against Milwaukee
HOUSTON - Age doesn't matter. At least Houston's right-hander Dwight Gooden shares this opinion. The 38 year old pitched a 2-hit shutout against Milwaukee, recording his 1st shutout of the season. Gooden (1-0) struck out 8 and issued 2 BB, throwing 75 of 120 pitches for strikes. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Houston's rightfielder Ellis Burks finished with 3 hits in 4 AB, blasting a homerun, stroking a double, scoring 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Gooden. The final score of the game was 5-0.
