I traded everyone on my team worth at least a 3rd. That left me with not much on the major league roster. I then went out and signed like 7 mid range FA and 1 top tier FA to have as a veteran when I want to win again. Not much more I can do the swing in a baseball season is +or-17 games. A team that wins 50 had the potential to win 67 or 33. Look up the math on it. Its the only way to rebuild. Unless youre an awesome GM like Trevor. Trevor is the guy I'm trying to emulate longterm lol As much shit as I give him I'm sure those sweet deals don't just fall into his lap he probably works for most of them.

This is just the third league now where I'm positioned for a top pick for the 2nd/3rd year in a row without breaking any rules and suddenly tanking rules are a discussion.

So yea the wheel is popular at the moment. How about a modified lottery system? The idea I came up with is that we stick with the status quo, but whenever a team fails to win 50 games (this is right about the average worst season for each team for the past 29 seasons), only then does it trigger a lottery. And the lottery would involve the bottom 4 (or so) teams. If more teams tank hard under 50 wins, more teams are involved in the lottery (expands to 6 or 8 or so teams). The lottery teams would have generally unweighted values except those teams under 50 wins whose values will decrease depending on how many wins under 50 they are. We can certainly keep it unweighted, provide a max number of picks a pick can slide, etc. In seasons in which all teams win at least 50, then there is no lottery. This forces a team to at least field a respectable team while still "tanking". I'm not opposed to teams doing a hard rebuild (losing 100 games) but failing to win 40 games is pretty bad. It effects the other teams in the league, inflating win values of other teams in the division (also affecting wild card). Thoughts?

There is something to be said for the analytics or statistical part of it. Its a real thing. Be as bad as possible and get as much youth as possible. Save money. Then spend and draw from that youth to build a team.

If I tank for 1 or 2 seasons not 7 like some and lose the first pick. I'll be pissed. I've literally watched teams just play guys with poor ratings on purpose and nothing be done. So the fact that I'm trying to actually rebuild now and this comes up.... I don't like it.

The reservation system also helps teams with a better historical past. For example, who the fuck can the pirates reserve when other teams have legends across the entire lifespan of their team. Jose Lind should be coming up. On a more serious note, it's not that the Pirates are devoid of greats, it's just that most of their greats are from an era prior to where we are in HOFFBL. There are more black-and-white photos than colored ones on their franchise's top 24 players at B-R. So until McCutchen comes along, you're left with guys like Bonilla, Drabek or Jay Bell who probably aren't eligible (who is eligible? I've seen Chris post a top 10 or top 15 list each season. Are those the only players eligible for reserving?) or aren't worth reserving.

I mean, Ive been tanking. I sold all my players for pennies cause trading in this league is a chore.... part of the issue is there is soo much talent here, that the few that stand out people want the farm for, and then you have some that want a 1st for a guy that is just a tad above avg and 34. I mean either a trade gets done quick or it's for the farm... still irritated dougie bailed you out in the expansion draft lol

Sorry, misread your message. I've got Saberhagen in the 83 draft! No love for Carlos Beltran? Not sure which of our teams he'd qualify more for but still. Hard to argue with 2 Cy Youngs, plus I would have to wait. I doubt I would have enough points left over for Beltran, so he's all yours!

Curious though, do you think we are conflating "tanking" with "rebuilding"? How do you define it? Tanking, like dougie mentioned, is intentionally putting the worst team out there, whereas a hard rebuild is trading away good veteran pieces, fielding a "meh" team with some young guys and some journeymen who fill out the roster.
This.
I feel like a lot of people are confusing a rebuild with outright tanking.
When my team has the worst record even though I've done exactly what Chris described as a rebuild and not tanking yet there are tanking discussions I have a problem with that.
