Monday 7/11/1998: California's Hundley wins Player of the Week award
Todd Hundley wins his 3rd Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Todd went 12 for 21 (.571), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 12 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! Todd is hitting .276 this year, with 77 hits in 279 at bats. He has driven in 69 runs, slugging .566. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Shawn Wooten, Milwaukee's starting third baseman. He hit .550 with 5 RBI and slugged .800 in 20 at bats.
Thursday 7/7/1998: Arizona has no chance in a 2-hitter by Mark Gubicza
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's right-hander Mark Gubicza is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Arizona found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Gubicza 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 11th shutouts in his career. With one out in the 6th inning Kevin Jordan singled to break up the no-hitter. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Gubicza (11-3) struck out 6 and issued 1 BB, throwing 69 of 109 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for San Francisco was third baseman Matt D. Williams, he finished 3 for 5, homering twice, scoring two runs with 4 RBI. San Francisco improved its record to 53-30, scoring 9 runs on 14 hits.
Wednesday 7/6/1998: California's Ken Griffey Jr. clears fence four times
MINNESOTA - Hitting homeruns is one of the most difficult things in sports. To hit four of them in one game is almost sensational. California's leftfielder Ken Griffey Jr. accomplished that feat in a 13-8 win over Minnesota. His 1st blast, a two-run homerun off Paul McClellan in the 1st inning, landed an estimated 443 feet from home plate. In the 2nd inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Paul McClellan. His 3rd shot, off Damaso Marte in the 6th inning, was a three-run homerun and cleared the fence in right field. A 455 foot drive to left field marked his 4th bomb, a two-run homerun off Gabe White in the 7th inning. Overall he collected 4 hits in 5 trips to the plate, with FOUR runs scored and driving in 8 runs. In 5314 career at bats, he has hit 241 homeruns and collected 850 RBI. California improved its record to 65-18, scoring 13 runs on 15 hits.
