It's the 3rd time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to California's pitcher Kenny Rogers. He started 6 games in September, going 6-0 and compiling an ERA of 1.28 in 49.1 innings. Kenny fanned 34 hitters. Opposing players hit .202 against Kenny this season. While posting an ERA of 1.92 he went 26-3 in 33 starts, fanning 175 and walking 44 hitters. Kenny has pitched 5 shutouts and 10 complete games. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! Chicago (A)'s leftfielder Henry A. Rodriguez had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. Henry A. went 36 for 102 (.353), while hitting 12 HR and collecting 36 RBI. His season numbers are: .295 AVG, 171 hits, 48 doubles, no triples and 41 taters, along with 139 RBI and 97 runs scored. The National League's best player of the month was New York (N)'s Tony Clark, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Tony was on fire, hitting .433 with 12 homeruns and 35 RBI. Clark has walked 74 times this year and posts a .387 OBP. While batting .305, 176 for 577, he has driven in 129 runs. He's 3rd in the National League in RBIs and 4th in homeruns!
Friday 9/30/1998: Mike Devereaux ropes four hits, completes cycle
ATLANTA - Atlanta's centerfielder Mike Devereaux accomplished a difficult feat in a game against Cincinnati, hitting for the cycle to improve his career batting average to .311! A double off Ken Hill in the 2nd inning accounted for his 1st hit. In the 5th inning he unloaded a triple off Ken Hill. A single in the 7th off Candy Sierra accounted for his 3rd hit. His 4th hit, a GRAND SLAM off Rafael Betancourt in the 9th inning, cleared the fence in left field. His final hit of the game capped his performance as it won the game, setting the crowd on fire! That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Mike did drive in 4 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He is hitting .319 this season, with 6 HR and 79 RBI. 96 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Mike. On 9/4/1998, Rob Nelson was the last player to hit for the cycle.
Thursday 9/29/1998: San Francisco's Mitchell out for 5 weeks
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, shortstop Kevin Mitchell, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 5 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Mitchell was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Torn Groin Muscle. Mitchell has hit 22 homeruns this year while batting .318. He adds 39 doubles, along with 93 runs scored.
Monday 9/26/1998: Edgar Martinez drills 5 hits
CHICAGO (N) - On Monday, Cincinnati's third baseman Edgar Martinez displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Chicago (N), punishing their pitchers with five hits. His 1st hit, a two-run homerun off Blake Stein in the 1st inning, landed an estimated 418 feet from home plate. In the 3rd inning he belted a double off Blake Stein. A pitch from Ken Takahashi in the 7th inning left his bat for a double. He had singles in the 5th and in the 7th inning (one RBI). Edgar scored 3 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .379. Cincinnati improved its record to 85-74, scoring 17 runs on 21 hits.
Monday 9/26/1998: Chicago (A)'s Roberto Alomar gets milestone hit
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s second baseman Roberto Alomar joined some elite company today, collecting his 2000th career hit! His hit in the 8th inning was a single off Jose Melendez. In 9 years of big league action so far, Roberto has compiled a batting average of .318, along with 118 homeruns and 776 RBI. 'Good things happen when you put the bat on the ball.'
Monday 9/26/1998: Montreal's Guerrero wins Player of the Week award
It's the 1st time that the Aerican League Player of the Week award goes to Toronto's shortstop Eric Davis. Eric went 11 for 21 (.524), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 10 RBI. Eric is hitting .263 ths year, with 116 hits in 441 at bats. He has driven in 53 runs, slugging .438. Vladimir Guerrero from Montreal wins his 3rd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Vladimir pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .429 with 3 HR and 16 RBI while slugging .800.
